A Sustainable Solution
By Maxim Corcoran
We have been stuck in a poor living condition for a long time, too embarrassed to ask for help. Since moving in here, our apartment building has seen neighbors attempting suicide, drug dealers and addicts coming and going all night long, obnoxiously loud parties keeping everyone awake (during week days as well), screaming and fights, etc.
Chronic insect infestations, bugs of all types to where people note this as a reason alone for their moving out. Mice and rats, black mold and water damage throughout the building. Flooding and black mold which occurs through the wall units that come included inside of our apartment.
To make matters worse, the apartment complex hired unknown/non-professional “contractors” to carry out a brick repointing job. The results were disastrous, with everyone on our side of the building being exposed to hazardous materials.
As you can see, living here with this, day in and day out, is causing us an overwhelmingly intense amount of pain and stress, especially for my wife Dymphna and my elderly mother in law whom we help take care of. We must leave as soon as possible and we cannot do this without asking for help. We have a very small family and no one is financially able to lend a hand at all.
I should also emphasise that Dymphna has actively been fighting leukemia for a long time and because of this has developed other painful chronic conditions; the chronic stress alone of our situation is enough of a burden. She is completely unable to work and for a lot of the time she is unable to even leave the house. Her rest is frequently disturbed by living here. We often wonder if certain things might improve a little for her if we weren’t constantly living in a daily state of “fight-or-flight”! I just want her to live somewhere she can sleep safely and soundly at night, without having to ruminate on what will possibly go wrong next.
Embarrassing as it is to admit, our family lives at the poverty level in one of the most expensive states in the country. The Lord knows we have really tried our best to improve our situation on our own these last few years, but there has just been no way for us to keep our heads above the water.
